Character Birthdays - Preschool Maths 🎈• @theknowandplayspace

Mr 3 absolutely loves all things birthdays & celebrations, and will always be giving me things for my ‘birthday’ and putting ‘candles on cakes’ made from all sorts of things! So today’s maths was right up his street.

I lined up some of his favourite character toys (he’s also super into positioning play so this suited his sense of order. Other children may like the characters hid round the room for them to find!), and hand delivered them all mini birthday cards with a balloon on. Inside each of the balloons was a number!

I told him it was his characters’ birthdays and that he needed to deliver them a cake BUT he had to make sure it was the right number of candles for their age.

Mr 3 carefully checked the balloon and then out that number of candles onto a playdough ‘cake’, then delivered it to the right character. He repeated this for each one ✨

You could do this with teddies, dolls, horses, characters… whatever your child is interested in! And as said above, you don’t have to do this at the table in a line, that’s just how we were this morning & what was best for that moment. We’ll repeat this again, as we often do with activities, but next time I’ll hide the characters round the room to get him up, moving and physically delivering the cakes 🎂 🏃🏽

Play Hoop ⭕️🌈 • @theknowandplayspace

SAVE this idea for baby play inspo 👶🏻

I wanted to make one of these sensory play hoops when Mr 3 was a baby, but never got round to it. I salvaged a hula hoops from my old school’s tip pile, and have saved it ever since 😂

From around 4 months, when baby is becoming stronger on their tummies, this is a great DIY to have and change up regularly. Not only are there different sensory elements to explore, it also encourages that rotation whilst on their tummies - moving round to investigate what else they can find!

I wrapped the hoop in black and white ribbons so that it was soft to touch, and gluegunned these down as I went so that they won’t come unravelled. I’ve then just tied things on, or used pram links, meaning the objects and materials can easily be swapped out for others. You needn’t buy anything additional. Like me, there’s bound to be things around your home you can use! It’s more just about ensuring there’s a variety of textures, things that make different noises, different shaped and sized objects etc. A wide variety is best!

If you don’t have a hoop, or don’t want to spend on getting one, you could use two large rings of thick cardboard stuck together. Anything that creates a circle to rotate around/in.

5 steps to creating a DIY garden pond 🐸 • @theknowandplayspace

Last year we made a little pond in the garden and were lucky enough to have a froggy friend come and live there 😍 This year we’ve used a bigger tub and have made our pond even bigger than before. We’re super excited to have tadpoles growing right now that are about to get their back legs! (Along with all sorts of other water critters we’re beginning to identify 🪲)

Having a small pond has been wonderful for attracting nature and learning about life cycles, but our best and funniest moment so far was when we spotted our lovely resident pigeon happily floating on the water like a duck 🦆😂

I am definitely not a pond expert so would totally recommend researching like I did on official wildlife websites too, if you’re wanting to find out more!

For the ‘beginning to move’ baby 👶🏻 A circle of toys! • @theknowandplayspace

It seems so simple doesn’t it? But this activity is always such a winner for babies who are just starting to move themselves.

Mr 6 months is really now spinning himself round when on his front, rolling with purpose and is beginning some transitional poses! It’s such an exciting time when babies start to learn to move themselves.

As an encouragement, I popped a selection of toys in a circle around him to explore. I tried to make sure he had a variety of textures, some that make noises, some that might move away from him if he touches them (to further encourage movement!).

A must do idea with babies who’re probably around the 5-7 months age!😍

DON’T PUT AWAY your plastic eggs just yet 🐣Your child is still learning! Find out WHY 👇🏽 • @theknowandplayspace

Living in such a fast paced world, we often feel as if we need to put the holiday items away and decor down immediately once the special day has finished. We’re already often thinking about what’s coming next. But for children, they’re still living in that moment. And for our littlest children, they need ways to repeat and repeat and repeat what happened in order to help them internalise and secure their new learning.

Mr 3 was still writing letters to Santa in February 🎅🏼 If he had a question to ask him, he’d write a card and pop it by the fireplace like we did with his Christmas list! After his second birthday, absolutely everything possible turned into a cake during play, and he was always on the search for things to use as candles. I was given so many pieces of ‘cake’ and had so many ‘birthdays’ last year! It was almost like an obsession.

Already since getting the Easter box out of the loft, we’ve done hunt after hunt round the house. We’ve investigated what fits in the eggs and what doesn’t. We used them in the sensory tray and made egg shakers. And they won’t be put away today either! They’ll become loose parts for Mr 3 to play with how he needs to, and I’ll use them as part of activities too.

Of course, they will go away eventually, when the time is right and the interest has waned. But for the next couple of weeks… now it’s time to do ‘Easter’ activities now that your little one knows what ‘Easter’ is and how it works in your house.

Easter Hunt Toddler Garden 🐣 • @theknowandplayspace

2 years ago we had just started our garden renovation and we were so lucky to have the most glorious weather for the Easter weekend. I remember spending the whole day outside after setting up this garden for Mr 3 (who was 1.5 years) at the time! I basically took a selection of indoor toys and books outside & set them up, woth some rainbow scarf arches and other outdoor toys alongside them. I hid the eggs around the garden for the hunt, but then he was able to just continue playing once he’d finished finding them. It was so wonderful!

Take this as your sign to make things a little bit ✨extra✨ on special celebration days. It needn’t cost much, or anything. Just sometimes the out of the ordinary. It’s so worth it for the memories 🌈

Things to put into Easter hunt eggs that aren’t chocolate 🍫🐣 • @theknowandplayspace
