I do EVERYTHING I possibly can to support language development, right from birth, and yet, both of my boys would be classed as ‘late’ talkers according to the stereotypical path.

Mr 1.5 still has no words. He’s beginning to make more ‘babble-style’ sounds, but barely. His understanding is absolutely where it ‘should’ be… it’s just the actual talking.

Yet, communication is necessary - and not being able to communicate his needs causes him so much frustration.

So… I created this. A simple communication board that uses pictures of things he knows and regularly needs. He takes off a velcro card, and comes and gives it to me. And this IS communication. It’s just not verbal.

He picked this up so quickly that I’m going to be extending it to offer more options and choices (you learn what pictures you need for each child’s board), but am also introducing Makaton alongside to offer another form of communication too.

I’m sure the words will come, in their own time. He’s on his own learning journey. But for now, this is how I can help best - facilitating him in a way that SUITS HIM & HIS STAGE.

Don’t put away your fillable eggs just yet!

Not only is it incredibly necessary for children to process events through their play (and from this weekend things like needing to repeat egg hunts would be a common), but also, there are so many ways that we’d can use resources that we have before they go back into a box for another year!

Your eggs may be filled, all ready for an Easter hunt tomorrow… but don’t put them away afterwards! 🥚

There are SO many ways that you can use fillable eggs to support learning through play based activities and games. This has been one or Mr 4.5’s favourites so far 😍

The idea? Fill each egg with a chick, and match it to the correct space in the egg box. For added challenge, have different coloured halves to match together too!

Tomorrow I’ll also be sharing a load more activities that you can do with fillable eggs - to get a whole load of fun, play & learning out of them, BEFORE you put them back into the box for next year!

School places are being released mid April, and with those often come the questions, the pressure and the feeling of ‘should I be doing more?’.

I want to get ahead of that. School readiness isn’t what many people think it is, and I want to challenge the misconceptions you may have BEFORE they cause you worry.

School readiness not about:
❌ reading early
❌ practising sit-down learning
❌ being able to count to ‘big’ numbers

It’s about something much deeper.

Things like confidence, independence and emotional resilience form strong foundations that children need in order to be able to engage, adapt, and manage new challenges.

That’s why I’ve created the School Readiness Roadmap.
A development-led pathway to guide you through supporting your child in the months before starting school.

The Roadmap will tell you:
✨ what to support your child with
✨ why these elements are important
✨ where and when to start
✨ how to build things gradually over time

& it has nothing to do with pushing academics earlier than what is developmentally appropriate.

This is why you should add BIG loose parts into your garden or outdoor play space this year 👇🏽

✅ supports gross motor development
✅ great for ‘heavy work’
✅ builds resilience, problem solving, perseverance & determination
✅ enables open-ended play, creativity and imagination
+ so much more!

Mr 4.5 spent over two hours in the end playing with three tyres and a load of planks. He started off making a gladiators-inspired obstacle balance beam course, and ended up two hours later with a hovercraft pirate ship!

He played and played and played and played and PLAYED!

Am through all of that play, a tremendous amount of learning and development occurred ✨🧠
