Your eggs may be filled, all ready for an Easter hunt tomorrow… but don’t put them away afterwards! 🥚

There are SO many ways that you can use fillable eggs to support learning through play based activities and games. This has been one or Mr 4.5’s favourites so far 😍

The idea? Fill each egg with a chick, and match it to the correct space in the egg box. For added challenge, have different coloured halves to match together too!

Tomorrow I’ll also be sharing a load more activities that you can do with fillable eggs - to get a whole load of fun, play & learning out of them, BEFORE you put them back into the box for next year!

School places are being released mid April, and with those often come the questions, the pressure and the feeling of ‘should I be doing more?’.

I want to get ahead of that. School readiness isn’t what many people think it is, and I want to challenge the misconceptions you may have BEFORE they cause you worry.

School readiness not about:
❌ reading early
❌ practising sit-down learning
❌ being able to count to ‘big’ numbers

It’s about something much deeper.

Things like confidence, independence and emotional resilience form strong foundations that children need in order to be able to engage, adapt, and manage new challenges.

That’s why I’ve created the School Readiness Roadmap.
A development-led pathway to guide you through supporting your child in the months before starting school.

The Roadmap will tell you:
✨ what to support your child with
✨ why these elements are important
✨ where and when to start
✨ how to build things gradually over time

& it has nothing to do with pushing academics earlier than what is developmentally appropriate.

You don’t need to worry or feel pressured.

This is why you should add BIG loose parts into your garden or outdoor play space this year 👇🏽

✅ supports gross motor development
✅ great for ‘heavy work’
✅ builds resilience, problem solving, perseverance & determination
✅ enables open-ended play, creativity and imagination
+ so much more!

Mr 4.5 spent over two hours in the end playing with three tyres and a load of planks. He started off making a gladiators-inspired obstacle balance beam course, and ended up two hours later with a hovercraft pirate ship!

He played and played and played and played and PLAYED!

Am through all of that play, a tremendous amount of learning and development occurred ✨🧠

So take this as your sign to get on Facebook Marketplace or Freecycle sites & find some free tyres and gravel/decking boards 🤩😍

This morning’s phonics activity - using the cars to revise blending & then getting the monster trucks to help with read in sentences and finding out what jobs they needed to do, or where they needed to park 🛻 🚗 Our @connetix_tiles made perfect little parking spaces!

This is the stage that Mr 4.5 is at the moment. He knows his single sounds, can blend to read simple words, and so now we’re working on being able to read short phrases and sentences - using sounds he knows!

Play is never ‘just play’.

It’s so much deeper than that, and shouldn’t be under valued.

It’s not a break from learning, a reward for finishing learning… Play IS learning.

Mr 4.5 discovered the Easter-themed @connetix_tiles prompt cards that I’d left up for him to find. (These are great for supporting independent play!)
I just sat back and watched him build, and within 4 minutes, he:
• counted how many shapes he needed
• used 1:1 correspondence to collect the right amount
• visually discriminated between shapes
• talked about the different types of triangles
• used spacial awareness to place the shapes, but also to build where he had enough space
• problem solved when his didn’t look the same as the picture
• did all of this independently

Early maths skills and learning behaviours needn’t be learnt sitting still, at a desk, filling in worksheets.

They can be learnt through PLAY. 🌈✨
