Sensory Squares Arc • @theknowandplayspace

Have a baby that’s begun to rotate around whilst on their tummy? Create them a sensory squares arc!

Whilst observing Baby R recently, I noticed that he’s particularly interested in textures. He’s also now spinning himself round whilst on his tummy. I made this DIY for Mr 3 when he was a baby and I remember him absolutely loving them - so here’s take 2!

I simply used some thick cardboard and cut it into squares, then cut a smaller square out from the middle to create a frame. Using thick tape, I attached some different materials to the frame and … that’s it. As simple as that!

I’ve got a few more frames to add some more materials to as I find them. Everything so far has just been from around that house!

Baby R’s favourite toys and resources at 3-6 months old 🌈 • @theknowandplayspace

I thought that as Baby R has now hit 7 months, it was a good time to round up the previous few months of play. I love making sure that he’s got developmentally appropriate resources in his play space, and although this list isn’t exhaustive, I’d say they’d have been his top picks!😍

How many? 🚘 • @theknowandplayspace

Whether it’s cars, horses, cuddly toys or pom poms… HOW MANY are allowed in this space?

Mr 3 is car obsessed and any game involving cars is usually a winner with him. I simply drew a loads of rectangles on some sheets of paper and added numbers 1-5 in each of them, then started playing myself! “Hey, my friend and I want to park somewhere. Have you got space for 2 of us?”

This simple activity led to so many learning opportunities:
• Counting quantities to match digits
• Understanding that the final number counted was the total
• Accurate 1:1 correspondence with counting
• Talking about one more eg. “I have 2 cars here. How many more do I need to park in this space?”
• Partitioning numbers/Number bonds to 5 eg. “I have 3 cars already, how many can you park with me to make 5?”
(All of these are EYFS objectives)

I’ll share some videos on my stories so you can see how these objectives above were met 👀✨

As said above, this doesn’t have to be done with cars. It could be done with anything your child is interested in! You could turn the shapes into little houses for people figures, or trees for birds. Whatever will capture your child’s interest and engage them. That’s the important part!!

A new look for the play space 👀🌈 • @theknowandplayspace

With Baby R now being mobile and his commando crawling getting faster every day, we needed to make some changes so that the playroom was suitable and safe for both boys.

Baby R needed more space to move, and all of Mr 3’s smaller things needed to be out of reach!

We’ve added these new Ikea Trofast shelves to the wall, and some of these trays will hold all the smaller play items. Mr 3 won’t be able to reach them himself, which means that we will have to get them down for him - making us extra vigilant with Baby R as we now know that unsafe things are in the play space. The other trays have then just got additional play resources in that we use regularly but wanted away.

The rest of the playroom has then been ‘baby-proofed’ on the lowest levels. Once Baby R is crawling properly and beginning to pull up on things, we’ll have to do another sort & check!
