The Seasons of Childhood

I believe that childhood unfolds in seasons.

Not the neat, predictable seasons of the calendar, but something altogether more personal, more layered and more beautifully unpredictable than that.

Children are constantly growing and evolving, moving through periods that feel expansive and full of energy, and periods that feel quieter, stiller, more turned inward. Some seasons arrive with a rush of new skills and rapid change. Others unfold slowly, almost invisibly, with growth happening deep beneath the surface before it ever becomes something we can see and name.

No two children move through these seasons in exactly the same way. No two seasons look exactly the same either.

What makes a Season?

Within every Season of Childhood, there are qualities that show up again and again, in different combinations, at different intensities, woven through the fabric of whatever your child is moving through right now.

Four qualities in particular appear across every season:

Growth. Sometimes loud and visible. Often quiet and hidden. Always happening.

Change. In development, in interests, in how your child approaches the world. Children are always evolving, and change, even when it feels turbulent, is always purposeful.

Challenge. The hard seasons. The big emotions, the power struggles, the behaviours that feel relentless. Challenge seasons are never meaningless. They almost always signal something important happening beneath the surface - a developmental leap, a need not yet met, a child pushing against the edges of their own capability.

Wonder. This is the quality I want every parent and carer to be able to find, in every season, however hard it might feel.

There are two kinds of wonder in childhood. There is the wonder children experience as they move through the world - the magic of a puddle, the delight of a snail, the absolute absorption of a child discovering something for the very first time.

There is the also wonder we witness as the adults around them - the small, extraordinary steps of development that happen every single day, steps that, if you do not know what to look for, you might not even notice.

A baby working out how to move from lying to sitting, not because anyone showed them, but because their body and brain figured it out together, incrementally, over days of quiet purposeful work.

A toddler using a word in exactly the right context for the first time.

A preschooler sustaining a complex imaginative game for an hour without any adult input.

These moments are miraculous, but you can only fully witness them if you understand what you are looking at.

Some seasons will have less obvious wonder in both senses. The challenge might feel heavy. The change might feel disorienting.

But wonder is always present in every season, in every child, at every stage.

We simply have to know how to look for it.

Why The Seasons of Childhood™ matters

Modern childhood can often feel rushed. There is increasing pressure for children to achieve more, earlier and faster, often at the expense of the developmental foundations they truly need in order to thrive long term.

The Seasons of Childhood™ is my gentle, holistic and developmentally respectful answer to that pressure.

It is rooted in one belief above all others: that when we truly understand our children - when we know what is happening beneath the surface, why it matters and what it looks like in the ordinary everyday moments of family life, everything changes.

We stop second-guessing and start trusting.

We stop comparing and start observing.

We stop trying to fix the season and start moving through it with our child.

We begin to find joy in the moments we might previously have missed. Pride in the progress that was always there but that we did not yet have the eyes to see. Contentment in the season we are in, even the hard ones, because we understand what it is doing and why it matters.

That is what The Know & Play Space exists for.

Not to tell you what to do. Not to give you more activities, more resources, more things to add to an already full day. But to help you truly understand your child, so that you can find the wonder in every season, be fully present in every moment and feel genuinely confident in the parent, carer or educator you already are.

How this shapes everything

at The Know & Play Space

The Seasons of Childhood™ is the philosophy that underpins all of my work. It shapes The Pathways - the developmental map that guides you through the early years from birth and beyond. It shapes The Trails - the thematic explorations that go deeper into specific areas of childhood. It shapes the membership, the guidance, the resources and every piece of content I create.

Whether I am helping you understand your baby's earliest weeks, navigate a toddler's season of big emotions, create a play environment that truly supports your child's development, or guide you through an educational pathway that feels right for your family, The Seasons of Childhood™ remains the foundation beneath it all.

When we truly understand children, we are far better able to nurture them with confidence, connection and compassion, through every season they move through.

Less pressure. More understanding.

Childhood, one season at a time.
