Why Childhood is like a Forest

When I picture childhood now, I picture a forest.
At first, this might seem like an unusual comparison, but stay with me.
Forests are not linear. They do not grow in neat stages. There are clearings, dense places, unexpected turns. There are periods of growth, periods of stillness and periods of change. Some places in the forest feel exciting, others can make you feel uncertain.
No two journeys through a forest ever look exactly the same. Our child's journey through their childhood feels much the same.
Children are not all walking one shared pathway. They're each born with their own temperament. They each have their own pace, heir own interests, their own experiences and their own 'seasons'. And yet so often, modern childhood can feel as though they are expected to walk a predefined route.
Reach this milestone by this age. Tick this box. Move to the next stage. Keep up. Childhood can be filled with comparison and rushed progress.
But forests don’t work like that. Some trees grow quickly. Some grow slowly. Some bend. Some spread. Some root deeply before growing upwards.
They all grow and exist differently, and children deserve the same understanding.
There will be seasons where childhood feels full of challenges.
There will be others that are full of growth.
There will be seasons where change is loudly visible in your child.
And in all, there will be wonder.
That's the magic of childhood.
Yet, raising our children doesn't come with a map. We start out and follow the paths we think we're meant to, and then something that take us right off track, or the pathway splits, bends, or loops back on itself. Perhaps that’s why so many of us feel overwhelmed.
This is the deeper reason why The Know & Play Space has evolved - not because I believe there is one perfect route, and I can't hand you a map, but because I do want to create a place that helps people navigate childhood with more confidence and understanding. A place that offers pathways, questions, ideas, support and guidance. A place for you to think, pause, learn, reflect and return to.
That’s why The Know & Play Space exists. I'm here to guide you through the forest that is childhood - season by season.
