One of the simplest and most powerful ways to support young children’s development at home is by offering small, purposeful activities that they can access independently.
In Montessori-inspired environments these are often known as 'shelf work' - carefully prepared invitations to explore that are placed on a low shelf for children to choose and use at their own pace.
Shelf work allows children to become active participants in their learning, rather than relying on adults to direct their play. It encourages children to practise developmentally-appropriate skills, solve problems, and repeat the play until they feel confident.
I've started this Spring with adding some life cycle and minibeast themed activities onto Mr 1 and Mr 4's shelves. All of these support a wide range of early developmental skills while still feeling playful, engaging and hands-on.
