Why is boredom powerful for preschoolers?

A quick walk around the garden in all its sunny glory this morning ☀️🌈

It won’t be for everyone, setting up so many spaces for play, but it’s what makes me happy & is for such a short number of childhood years that I can make do with less ‘adult’ space for now 🥰

I love being able to welcome so many little friends into our home, and know they’ll feel comfortable and excited to explore and play 🏡❤️ + all the developmentally benefits that my boys get daily from the garden too!

An at-home science experiment that really makes the importance of hand washing VISIBLE & therefore sticks!

Mr 4.5 is such a busy body, and is always desperate to get back to his playing as fast as possible. Having to go the toilet isn’t a welcome interruption in his eyes, let alone having to then spend time washing hands afterwards too! And who wants to wash hands before lunch when it’s sitting there ready to be eaten?!

BUT, of course washing hands is something that is so important in order to keep our bodies healthy. I found myself constantly reminding him, despite the books we’d read and conversations we’d had. I know that I’m not alone with this as a parent.

Since doing this experiment, I haven’t had to remind him once! He really now understands the importance of soap and a good scrub to get in all the creases of his hands. It just goes to show how important hands-on, meaningful and memorable learning can be!

POTIONS & CREATIONS SPACE 🧪✨🌈

If you don’t know me already, I absolutely LOVE setting up environments that invite play, inspire creativity & curiosity, and encourage deep exploration & investigation.

This space does all of that.

It isn’t perfect. It gets messy. The trays and pots get filled with goodness knows what from around the garden. But… WOW. The PLAY. The LEARNING. The DEVELOPMENT.

Over the last few days, I’ve witnessed.
🌿 sensory exploration
🌿 imaginative play
🌿 language development
🌿 problem solving
🌿 independence
🌿 fine & gross motor skills
🌿 exploration & investigation
🌿 mathematical thinking
+ a whole lot more!

There’s no ‘way’ to play here. It’s all totally child-led, with the opportunities to add and change up the enhancements when needed.

There’s more to changing a space than just… changing a space.

And that’s why I do what I do. ❤️

Kate came to me with a load of knowledge and understanding she’d tried to unpick, implement and try herself… but, it just wasn’t working.

She’d made a play space for her son in the centre of the home, packed full of good intentions and love… but, it didn’t work how she knew the space could do.

What she needed was guidance. Guidance, support and understanding. And that’s where I came in.

Kate and I went on a truly wonderful journey together, and as we transformed her son’s play space, I was also able to I still confidence, knowledge and understanding in her - making her feel capable in raising her son in the way she wants to raise him, because, SHE IS. I helped her understand child development, what to look for, how to observe, how to reflect upon what she notices, and what to do next after all of those things.

And so messages like the one I received this week are gold to me ✨ Because it showed that she really is beginning to believe in herself, and understand her child and his journey deeply.

That’s why it was so much more than just changing a space. Because the space and the journey has now empowered her, and her child.

A journey from how a book we read this morning, and an experience linked to this later on in the day, led into a whole afternoon of child-led learning ✨🌱🧠

The important part of all of this is the part about being a guide and a facilitator. As a primary trained TEACHER, I am still learning this, and improving on this, myself. But times like this really make me see the true power of child-led learning and how trusting the child and the process is so important 🌟
