Trajectory Schema + Autumn = Conker Rolling Ramps!

Mr 2, now halfway through his journey on what I call ‘The Sapling Pathway’ (1-3 years), is still very much into schema-led play.

Right now, he’s biiiig into throwing things. If I didn’t understand his development so well, a lot of the behaviour he shows because of this, could be seen as ‘naughty’. Really though, he’s not naughty, not at all. All children have goodness inside them. The behaviour is in fact communicating a need - a need for trajectory play!!

It’s therefore our job as the adult to prepare the environment upon noticing this. We can provide opportunities, resources and experiences that allow for trajectory play to be done safely and appropriately.

Ball runs or car ramps are great for this. As are the addition of crocheted or felt ball, bean bags and other soft items that CAN be thrown. It may be you have balls outside and a bucket your toddler can throw them into. Or you may have guttering or wooden planks and conkers like we have had this week!😍

I had a lovely conversation with another mummy today, and we both agreed that 2s aren’t terrible. 2 year olds get a bad rep… and the reason is, honestly, is because there’s a lack of understanding of development from the adults calling two year olds terrible. Once you understand development, you start to have more respect, patience and are able to find the wonder in your child’s everyday moments. Yes, even the hard ones!!

You can read more and delve deeper into toddler development over on my website. The Sapling Pathway is open & free for you to explore 🌲✨

Comment SAPLING and I’ll direct you there 🧭

Play doesn’t look like what we’d think ‘play’ is in the typical sense.

I believe that childhood is like a forest, and whilst on ‘The Acorn Pathway’, babies play is very much centred around connection, presence and everyday care.

To learn more and understand your baby’s development more deeply, you can visit ‘The Acorn Pathway’ on my website, as well as the other four Pathways in The Forest of Childhood🌲

Comment ACORN and I’ll direct you straight to it 🧭

Chapter 7 is out now 🍂🍃

The song in this chapter is one of my absolute favourites that I’ve written so far. I can’t get it out of my head!

And as if by nature’s magic, the wind here is whipping the trees infront of me and is really howling this morning 😍

Writing these stories so far has not only been a joy because of the amount of childhood magic and nostalgia I feel when doing so, but also because of the amount of knowledge I have gained through the research behind each chapter.

I love learning. I will always have a lifelong love of learning. Writing the ‘Science behind the Stories’ blog post each month is just as wonderful to me as the stories themselves!

Everything that Finn learns in the wood is true. It is scientifically correct and research-backed. It’ll guide your child through learning the same - through story, through song, through belonging ❤️✨🌳

Find Chapters 1-6 on my website now, with Chapter 7 coming tomorrow. You’ll also find September & October’s Science behind the Stories blog posts on there too 🍂✨

Comment TALES if you’re after any more information or where to find things.

This is one of those moments where it would be so easy to say no, not to jump, to be careful, to not get so wet and dirty, to not make a mess of the garden. But… why? Why not yes?

When we’re putting boundaries in place, it’s important to think… Is it dangerous? Is it harming themselves, others or things? If the answer is no to both of these questions… often, it’s worth saying yes and letting things play out.

Every jump here today built balance, strength and coordination. Every splash taught cause and effect. Every idea brought with it exploration, problem solving and investigation.

Puddles and mud are a brilliant resources when it comes to child development, but only if we let them be, and say yes to the mess. Children and clothes are washable!

When you understand development, it means you can see the wonder in the everyday moments in front of you ✨

Comment START for guidance on where to begin or deepen your understanding, so that you too can find the wonder that comes so naturally in childhood.

Have you made your ‘noticing medal’ yet this week?🏅✨🌳

Mr 5, Mr 2 and I have, as well as all of my Wonder & Wild-ers 🌿

Finn & Pip may have won Mr Oakes’ hunt, but all of us are winners really when we take time to get out in nature, slow down, and notice the wonders that others may pass straight by 🧡🍂

Find all of this week’s activities, linked to Chapter 6, inside the Wondrous Story World on my website ✨

(On a nerdy development side of things, I wonder if you can guess which of my development Pathways each child is on - based on their medal! It was fascinating seeing all the photos lined up 🤩)

It’s hard, really hard, to let go of preconceived thoughts about what our child should be like, how they should play, what they should be interested in…

But our little people are individuals themselves. Just as we are. And they have someone who they’re meant to become, rather than someone who we decide.

Whether through parenting or educating, when we have a hand in raising children, I really do believe it’s so important to keep this in mind 💭
